Critical Hiring in a Narrow Market

Artie is a deeply technical company operating in a very narrow talent market, with a strict in-office requirement in San Francisco.

Early on, Artie needed to make a critical founding sales hire, someone capable of selling a highly technical product while operating in an early-stage environment. The combination of technical depth, GTM skill, and geographic constraints made the search especially challenging.

Along with a handful of other agencies, HigherPeople initially partnered with Artie on a contingency basis, supporting this narrow search for their founding sales hire.

Consistently, HigherPeople’s submission volume exceeded that of all other agencies combined, and the submissions were moving farther in the process until we ultimately made the hire together.

That hire proved pivotal. As trust grew and hiring needs expanded, the partnership evolved into an exclusive and embedded model, with HigherPeople now supporting Artie across many other functions, even helping them build out their internal recruiting function to work alongside our team’s support.

The founding sales hire helped establish early GTM momentum. During the partnership, Artie went on to raise a Series A, marking a significant milestone in the company’s growth.

HigherPeople continues to support Artie as they scale, providing trusted judgment and execution across functions as the business evolves.

higherpeople’s deep understanding

HigherPeople invested deeply in understanding Artie’s product, customer, and technical bar allowing the team to:

  • Source from highly specific, high-signal talent pools

  • Filter aggressively to reduce noise

  • Move quickly despite tight constraints

This approach, plus continued focus and grit, enabled consistent progress in one of the most competitive hiring environments.

What stood out to Artie was the level of judgment, trust, and communication.

HigherPeople operated as a true partner: deeply embedded, highly selective, and focused on outcomes rather than activity. Transparent about challenges, shared exact numbers in weekly updates, and never disappeared when things got tough, which Artie noted was a surprisingly common experience with other recruiters.

HigherPeople alsonudged the team to improve the hiring system itself, from follow up emails to secure top candidates to accelerating parts of the process when needed. That steady communication and sense of partnership made it easier for leadership to hire confidently and stay focused on building the company.
